Would it be possible to put some sort of sensor inside plastic chess pieces that record the movement? Or perhaps a board that detects the piece movements (but inside the pieces would be better.) After a game (or during) we could scan the PGN into the computer?
This would be great for people like me that would like to record the games but is not going to carry around a notebook.

I'd say inside the board would be easier, why would the peices themselves be better? :)
ReplyDeleteThe board could easily detect a cheap RFID or unique magnetic signature in each piece, and so track every move for the whole game.
Hey FleckerMan,
ReplyDeleteI definitely considered using the board to record the moves. The main issue that this brings up is that you have to carry a (possibly expensive) board with you to play on.
If there is some way to put a chip inside the cheap plastic pieces, then everyone could just download the instructions to make the pieces and I could release the software (for free or a small fee).
Regardless....I'll have to talk to an EECS major or spend a few hours in the Radioshack.
